More than 5 years ago? Beware!

If you have been wearing the same prosthesis for more than five years without ever having had it examined by your denturist, you are exposing yourself to fully preventable health problems. Too many people believe that a prosthesis is good for about 20 years. Nothing could be further from the truth!

A removable prosthesis is made of a hard material that is not malleable. Furthermore, your face, mouth and jaws evolve and transform over the years. Since the prosthesis is not adaptable and artificial teeth wear down over time, a dental prosthesis is only good for about five years. This reality leads to adverse impacts that are often invisible and cannot be perceived by the person wearing a prosthesis that has reached the end of its useful life.

Here is a partial list of the most adverse effects of wearing the same prosthesis for more than five years:

  • Softening of the gums
  • Painful and irritated gums
  • Difficulty chewing and digesting
  • Headaches, ear aches, neck pain and painful joints
  • Premature ageing of the mouth and face
  • Accelerated receding of the gums
